For ambitous do-gooders working behind the scenes to make the world a nicer place for all of us
I have created Mission Mindset Coaching in response to our enormous and mounting global challenges and my own drive to work through these challenges (which are both internal and external) in order to transform the world into a truly sustainable, thriving, healthy, equitable, and inclusive place to live.
To achieve the ambitious and comprehensive Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs), we need transformational—not incremental— changes. As someone who is absolutely in love with personal development and coaching, I immediately realized that we have to start with internal transformation because this shit is hard, scary, and totally overwhelming!
My hero, Christiana Figueres, insists that the future isn’t set yet. We have to imagine a new world, keep believing in it, and then do the work to make it happen. She said that there was a palpable sense of optimism when the Paris Agreement was signed—but, actually, optimism was the primary input. This makes complete sense and fits perfectly with the coaching model I use and teach. It all starts with our thoughts and our emotions fuel everything.
I recently took a course on Education for Sustainable Development, and I kind of blew a gasket. My colleagues were uncomfortable stepping outside their “comfort zones” of expertise and therefore wouldn’t do it… But of course dealing with climate change and transitioning to an entirely new way of living and doing business is outside every single one of our comfort zones! The future is a big, giant unknown, and humans hate uncertainty. The future we want doesn’t exist yet, and what we need to do is entirely outside of anything we’ve ever done before.
Largely through my own struggles with these issues—especially getting depressed about the state of the world and constant downhill trajectory (as I saw it), multiple massive burnouts, and yo-yoing between sacrificing myself to the cause and wanting to give up—I found coaching.
You are simply too precious to feel this bad or struggle so hard.
We need you in the world!!
So much of coaching is about making buckets of money and losing weight…. But these are super powerful tools, and I want them into the hands of people making the world a better place (by my definition, working towards sustainability in the broadest definition of the word). Thus, I’ve created Mission Mindset coaching. This program is chock-full of content that will change the trajectory of your life and mission forever, plus one-on-one coaching with me.
As an Associate Professor, I work on tropical forest management and conservation in the context of climate change mitigation and sustainable development (lots of carbon accounting in the land use, land use change, and forestry sector).
Now, with the Eco-Innovation Foundation, we are working on The Wood Solution—which harnesses the power of the markets to drive the development of a whole new, regenerative forest-based industrial system that drives large-scale forest and landscape restoration. It’s totally genius and also completely bonkers. Seriously—industrial development on a continental scale?!? But the more we talk about it, the more it seems possible... and after three years, I am actually convinced it will happen!
As a human, I am absolutely fascinated and obsessed with how we humans work (particularly myself) and what we need to go though/ who we need to become to take on these massive global challenges and eventually lead us through gigantic transformations.
As a coach, I am obsessed with two things: 1) putting these well-researched and effective tools from coaching, cognitive psychology, and business into the hands of people doing great things for the world, and 2) making sure we do NOT use these tools against ourselves.
I was first introduced to coaching through Kara Lowentheil and took her 6-month Unf*ck Your Brain program and soon after got certified at the Life Coach School. Now I am deep into Somatica coaching and am training in the Institute for Equity-Centered Coaching and Leadership. I have done a 10-day Vipassana meditation retreat and a 500-hour Transformational Yoga Teacher training. I read a LOT of books, binge on podcasts (currently loving Tara Brach and Martha Beck, and of course—Outrage+Optimism!), and do a LOT of examining my own self…
In short—I have a thought work/mindset-based coaching style, nicely rounded out with deep emotional work and compassion. I am always learning and growing and am so happy to go on this journey with you:-).
